Kam came to us yesterday (see post in random ramblings). He is a beautiful male collie. We have been told he is about 6 years old but until he sees the the vet we are not that certain. He is very frightened of everything but is just starting to come to us when called. If you move he either ducks or backs away. At sometime in the past his jaw has been badly broken leaving him with a lovely lopsided grin. He eats and drinks ok but needs to have soft food. He does not appear to be in any pain from it but he will be visiting thre vet soon and I am sure they will check it over.
He has just had a shower and although he tried to get away from it was very good and let me do a not too bad job. He is even still speaking to me.
He desperately wants to play with Holly but at the moment she doesnt want to know and is growling at him. He actually got quite distressed when I put her in the kitchen for a minute when she growled at him and when I went to let her back into the lounge he followed me to check she was ok.
He is very friendly and desparatly wants to be loved. He is already responding to kindness and his tail is now up and wagging loads.
I will add pictures asap.

And here he is. It is thought he was a farm dog and as such living in a home is a new experience for him. He does however seem to be taking to home life and other than a bit more toilet training needed he is doing well He loves a ball but shows little interest in dog treats. He does like sausages and cheese however. He knows few basic commands other than "wait" and "stay". He is showing a lot of affection to us and comes and puts his head under your hand to receive a tickle. He has not been cat tested but has seen them outside and ignores them. Similarly he has only met children over 10 but it is thought that he would find young children too boisterous in his current nervous state. He will make someone a fantastic and very loyal companion. Blondie and I will add to this post in the days to come as we are learning about him all the time

Well Kam is coming on in leaps and bounds. From being a very nervous dog he is becoming the friendliest boy you could meet. He doesnt like traffic much but he is being regularly walked along busier roads and is slowly getting used to it. He is settling relly well and getting used to the routine (such as it is) here. He likes nothing better than to curl up on the floor next to you or put his head into your lap to be stroked and tickled. He is one special boy and is looking for his special people.

For the first time tonight Kam has eaten all his meal from a bowl. Up till now he he had to "steal it" from the kitchen floor. He is still a bit unsure about whether he is allowed it or not but as long as I dont see him take it all is well. We assume that he either had to scavenge for food or it was just thrown down and he had to get what he could.
He is still very unsure at times but is coming on in leaps and bounds and has relaxed sufficiently to sleep soundly enough to snore. He is also using his bed more instead of just lying on the carpet. He is gradually learning to become a house dog and a pet.

Kam has become a fine pet in the house. He has not had any toileting accidents for quite some time. He now eats really well from his food bowl and since being caught eating dried food from the bag in the kitchen he is now only having a small amount of meat. His basic commands are coming on and he is eager to please.
Outside he has a few issues which we are working on. Though he walks well on the lead he has does have problems with traffic and other dogs. The traffic problems are gradually improving but at the moment he needs more experience with seeing other dogs.

It's been a couple of weeks since our last update on Kam. He is progressing slowly but surely and in the house one could not wish for a better dog. He is very loyal to his "pack", much more trusting and eager to please. He loves to lie at my feet in the evenings (the very picture of the loyal collie at his masters feet).
Outside, he is improving greatly too. He is stalking traffic less and less as time goes by, but we still have to be wary of his response to other dogs. He is very good walking on a long line with us, never being more than a few feet away and we have found that he responds well to hand signals.
His wonky jaw seems to give him no trouble, though we do make sure that he only has access to soft, lightweight balls for games, and we don't let him have tuggy toys. Fortunately he does not tend to destroy toys, but treats them as prized posessions.
The work with him goes on.

Kam is making good progress although having noticed that he appeared to be having diffficulty seeing sometimes he has had a visit to the vet. He, unfortunately has the start of cateracts in both eyes. The estimate of his age has been revised to about 9 - 10years. Outside he is improving in his behaviour with other dogs so much so that we were able to stop and talk to people with a couple of off lead Labs and he behaved beautifully. He is variable however and does sometimes take a dislike to particular dog. He is also improvig with the traffic and has been known to merely glance at a vehicle when it passes. We have found that a sqeaky toy works well as a distraction for him. He continues to be great in the house and is showing more trust in us.

A quick update on Kam as we are so proud of him today. We went for a walk and found that half the rest of local dog owners were doing the same. We started with two dogs passing fairly close but avoiding us which Kam watched but walked on with no problems. There was also a dog ahead but with encouragement he did not drop into stalk mode. As our walk progressed he saw a spaniel who came right up to him and although he wasnt happy he did not try to attack it. Sevral other dogs passed us and with the exception of a Collie he did not react adversly to any of them. The Collie came up to him and was literally inches away from him and this proximity was just too much but he walked away and did not do his normal twisting completely around to see him he merely looked back to check he was heading away. He had loads of praise for his behaviour today and we are very pleased with him.

Kam is now staying with both his current foster parents and LRDR. He will be a long-term foster dog, and will see out his golden years in the home he has come to know so well.

Just a few words about Kam. He continues to make progress with other dogs and now as lomg as he feels safe he will merely watch other dogs rather than trying to eat them. He does have a distinct safety zone and as long as dogs stay outside it he is ok. Naturally he is never off lead but does enjoy his football game with Blondie on the long line.
For anyone who hasnt met him and wants to he will be at the sponsored dog walk all being well. He is friendly to people but if you want to approach him please do not bring your dogs too near and bear in mind he is quite nervous. It will be the first event he has been to so we are not sure how he will behave. He has mixed with dogs at training classes and at frostymabels socialisation walks so has had some practice with numbers of other dogs in the vicinity.

I'm hoping OH will be willing to bring me to the Sponsored Walk. If we make it, I'll have Scoot's who's pretty much bombproof. I'd love to meet Kam and understand to take my time. Scooter will be up for some distance parallel walking if Kam feels able

Thanks Cath. Lady & Holly will be there as well so at least there will be a couple of dogs he knows and we will keep him well clear of the rest of the pack. I'm not sure how he will take to it, but all who read this can be assured that he will be kept well under control!
Hope you can make it
